welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited you're here. This blog will show you my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many stories. I care more about people than pictures, because it's your story that provides photo-worthy moments.

Besides photography, I love my husband Jeff, our miniature schnauzer Petey, movie theater candy, and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

All of the fun photos in the blog header are of Jeff and I recently -- taken by our amazingly talented friends Jeremy and Ashley of www.wearetheparsons.com! We have them to thank for capturing us exactly how we are.

Jenny and Cameron on the Banks of a Kansas River

Sandy shores in Kansas. Who knew? Jenny and Cameron knew… and they picked a river in Derby, Kansas, for their engagement session. She’s originally a California girl, who needed a little sand in her engagement session. This California girl turned into “the girl next door” (or was it across the street?) from Cameron. Cameron’s a...

Country Picnic Engagement Session: Allyson and Matt in Kansas

She was out for lunch with her best friend at a favorite Wichita pizza place, Knolla’s. He was working at the family business when she came in. He took their order (she prefers cheese pizza) and he couldn’t help but take a peek at her name when she paid with her credit card. She says...

Nick and Sarah in Downtown Wichita

I love Nick and Sarah. They’re some of the best people I know. I told Jeff today that they’re “constant encouragers.” They’re friends who are always excited about what is happening in their friends’ lives. Plus, they’re fun. I was so excited when they wanted to take part in the portrait special to benefit HOBY....

Is there such a thing as too much green?

If so, I’m in trouble. After my recent post about painting my dining room green, I got to thinking — what constitutes too much green in one home? Is there such a thing? Where should I draw the line? “Hey,” I told myself, “I don’t have that much green in my house.” So, I got...

Toby the Schnauzer (disguised as a Scottie).

This little guy is staying with us right now. He thinks my new Pottery Barn rug is a patch of grass. Yeah… Still, how can you not love this face? If you can see his face, anyway, through all of that dark hair! He looks more like a Scottie to me than a Schnauzer. Petey...

Kansas City Engagement Photos in Westport: Yen and Christopher

Yen and Christopher met up with me in the Westport area of Kansas City for a super sweet photo shoot on a chilly afternoon. Luckily, Yen is a trooper and still wore her super cute dress and amazing heels. I love it when girls get girly for their engagement sessions! I also love shooting in...

Hawthorne House Wedding: Brianna and Brady

Their story began as high school sweethearts. This past weekend, they became husband and wife. And I got to capture it. Brianna and Brady’s wedding was a celebration — family and friends came together to support and celebrate this next big step in their relationship, and you could feel the love in the room. The...

Homemade girl scout cookies — Yes, I made my own!

I have a huge sweet tooth. Like 28 of them. So when I missed the opportunity to buy Girl Scout cookies this year (hello, where are all the girl scouts in my neighborhood??), you can imagine that I was pretty sad. I tried to convince myself that it was a blessing in disguise, better for...
