welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited you're here. This blog will show you my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many stories. I care more about people than pictures, because it's your story that provides photo-worthy moments.

Besides photography, I love my husband Jeff, our miniature schnauzer Petey, movie theater candy, and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

All of the fun photos in the blog header are of Jeff and I recently -- taken by our amazingly talented friends Jeremy and Ashley of www.wearetheparsons.com! We have them to thank for capturing us exactly how we are.

The Lovely Laura

I recently taught a private photography lesson, and Laura was our model. She was perfect for it. She’s a photographer herself, and was super confident and tons of fun to photograph. The light was SO golden before the sun set, and I was really into backlighting the images and leaving the really golden hues. We...

Sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean

I have more pretty photos for you from my North Carolina trip! I know you’re ready to see more photos of people and their stories and their weddings… but I also love sharing the things I get to do and see, and what frames are captured through my camera. So, continuing the North Carolina series,...

Life is a Roller Coaster!

One of the fun things about life are the ups-and-downs. A day after the big “up” of an awesome vacation with my best friend, came a “down” — getting my car broken into on a photo shoot and my purse stolen! It’s one of those things that you just never expect to happen to you....

Bald Head Island with my best friend.

I took a weekend trip to North Carolina with my best friend. It was relaxing, beautiful, and pretty hilarious. We’ve been best friends for almost 20 years (how crazy is that?) and we’ve never taken a trip with just the two of us (even more crazy). Our favorite part of the trip was our visit...

Family (and maternity!) photos

I’ve said it before… but I love taking photos of families again and again! I got to take Troy’s photos last year during his first year, and saw this adorable family multiple times throughout the year. Now, they’re expecting another baby in December and wanted some family/maternity photos before their new little one arrives! I’m...

Babies and dogs… two of my favorite things!

This family session was a lot of fun, especially since I had worked with them really recently for Dylan’s portraits just a few months ago. This time, I got to photograph everyone — mom, dad, new little brother, and Oscar the Boxer. I have a pretty fun job! We met at a park for some...

Family Photos at Antioch Park

The season for fall family portraits is winding down, but going out with a bang for sure! The leaves are falling more and more from the pretty fall trees every day, but hanging on just long enough for us to get some great fall portraits (my favorite time of year for outdoor sessions!). I met...

Out of town!

I’m on an awesome weekend trip with my very best friend to the North Carolina coast. I’m leaving my computer at home and celebrating almost 20 years of friendship with my BFF Kasie. So, if you’re trying to reach me… I’ll be back to work on Monday! I have created a few little blog posts...

Lisa and Kyle’s Sunrise Engagement Session

Lisa and Kyle braved the chilly October weather and an early morning session time… and it was worth it! We had a great session along the Trolley Track Trail at sunrise. There’s just no beating the beautiful morning light and two fun people. I love the images from their session, and I am really going...

Mandi and Matt’s Country Sunset Engagement Session

Mandi and Matt are awesome. They trusted me completely with the location of their shoot, and I scouted some really cool spots out in the country west of the city. They wanted something that was natural and rustic, and I love the shots we got at sunset on a really perfect October day. Not only...
