welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited you're here. This blog will show you my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many stories. I care more about people than pictures, because it's your story that provides photo-worthy moments.

Besides photography, I love my husband Jeff, our miniature schnauzer Petey, movie theater candy, and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

All of the fun photos in the blog header are of Jeff and I recently -- taken by our amazingly talented friends Jeremy and Ashley of www.wearetheparsons.com! We have them to thank for capturing us exactly how we are.

The snowy desert: Engagement at Red Rocks Canyon!

I had no idea it snowed in the desert. I haven’t spent much time in the desert, but I have spent my whole life in places where snow is not unusual — I thought the desert was one place where snow wasn’t common. So imagine my surprise when we showed up at the gorgeous Red...

Where we are!

I completely forgot to let you know that we were headed west — to Las Vegas for WPPI (a photography conference). So, it’s been quiet around here! Did you know it snows in the desert? Well, it does. And it did, at sunrise when we showed up for a shoot at Red Rocks Canyon. It...

Black and white film shots from the Diana F+

When we visited this adorable family a few weeks ago, I also took along the Diana F+ to shoot a roll of film for them. I thought I was shooting in color… apparently I grabbed the black and white roll from my bag. Oops. I still like these, though, because it was winter and the...

Happy Birthday to my mom!

I’m incredibly blessed to have my mom for a mom. It’s a rare gift that not everyone can claim as their own, and today, I just want to write a little note to my mom and share with all of you how special she is. It’s hard to form words about a woman you’ve known...

Petey’s favorite spot.

Petey is a winter dog… or at least, has a winter birthday like me. He doesn’t really enjoy being cooped up inside all the time, though, and misses his walks with birds chirping and sun shining (I think so, anyway). What he DOES enjoy about the winter, though, is a little spot in our living...

2010 Wedding Favorites: Canvas Giveaway WINNER!

Wow, the votes were rolling in all last week for the 2010 Wedding Favorites contest! It was awesome to see everyone’s comments for their favorite images and to see family and friends rallying around the couples! A lot of super nice comments were made about the couples themselves, which is awesome to read — since...

Lilian: 6 months old!

Lilian is adorable. She has the biggest blue eyes, is quick to smile, and was perfect through our whole shoot (although maybe a little sleepy). She also has the kindest parents in the world — we met when they helped Jeff and I last year in the middle of an ice storm when we were...

One Year Old Already: Blake!

I got to take photos of Blake just after his first birthday. Since his birthday is in January, and it’s freezing outside, we did photos at home (which I love) and I basically followed Blake around and tried to capture photos of things he loves to do at this stage in his life. They just...

It’s my party and I’ll eat cupcakes if I want to.

Today is my birthday. And I love birthdays. My poor husband married a girl who loves her birthday. The good news is that because my birthday is less than a week before Valentine’s Day, I don’t really care all that much about Valentine’s Day. No pressure on the 14th. Just on the 8th. When I...

Portraits in a Missouri snowstorm!

Jeff and I rolled into Springfield, Missouri, during a snowstorm that we didn’t know we were going to run into. The snow was falling heavily and blowing around like crazy. We’ve had so much snow recently (a real blizzard even!) that it was pretty crazy that I haven’t yet taken photos of anyone in the...
