welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited you're here. This blog will show you my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many stories. I care more about people than pictures, because it's your story that provides photo-worthy moments.

Besides photography, I love my husband Jeff, our miniature schnauzer Petey, movie theater candy, and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

All of the fun photos in the blog header are of Jeff and I recently -- taken by our amazingly talented friends Jeremy and Ashley of www.wearetheparsons.com! We have them to thank for capturing us exactly how we are.

Lauren and Ryan’s engagement session: an amazingly beautiful fall evening.

Where do I even begin with Lauren and Ryan? They’re funny, easygoing, and so much fun to be around. They also have this amazing chemistry in front of the camera, and you can just see how much they mean to each other. I told them during the shoot that they look super comfortable together, totally...

I’m going to miss this family!

We fit in one last session before this family moves around the holidays. We’ve done quite a few sessions in the past few years, and each time, their kids get cuter, sweeter, and even more fun! I have loved being able to document their lives over the past few years, and always enjoy the shoots,...

Lifestyle family photos: in the home!

I will say it again: I love shooting family portraits in the place that families feel most comfortable… their homes! There’s something extra special about having photos in a home, surrounded by the things that are most familiar and have meaning for parents and children. It’s also really fun to let kids show off the...

Johna and Mitch’s Engagement Session!

Johna, Mitch, and their two sweet dogs met me at sunrise (on one of the first pretty chilly mornings of the fall!) for an engagement session. It was awesome to get to know them a little bit — Johna and Mitch are super fun, easygoing, and have a great time together. They care deeply about...

The more, the merrier! :)

Families should always have photos taken together — even when kids are grown, married, and start having their own kids! Extended family photo sessions are so much fun, because individual families/couples/kids get little sessions within the session, while also capturing fun photos with grandparents. Who wouldn’t love to see a great photo of them as...

Family photos: Deanna Rose Farmstead

There’s nothing I’d rather do on a gorgeous fall morning than spend time documenting a family, especially when it’s also at a farm made for children with all sorts of things to explore. This family of three is super adorable, and I was excited to photograph them after meeting them at a wedding of some...

It’s a great time for family photos!

I get to meet the cutest families. Seriously, I love seeing how families I photograph interact with each other, have fun, and let their personalities shine through. This family was no different. They were so much fun to explore the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art grounds with, and with a 6-year-old, 3-year-old and 7-month-old, it was...

On this day:

I’m celebrating us. I’m joyful in the fact that you love me, unconditionally. I’m smiling because you’re silly and you make me laugh. I’m thankful because you’re a constant source of encouragement. I’m remembering four years ago, when I put on a white dress and we promised everything to each other. I’m aware that back...

Parkville, Missouri Family Photos!

Parkville is a super cute town, just north of downtown Kansas City. It’s quaint and charming and completely adorable. Almost as cute as the family I got to photograph there. They’re seriously fun, have super well-behaved and adorable children, and were so great to photograph. I love how their shoot turned out! There are just...

Family photos at the Nelson-Atkins Museum!

I love this family. We’ve done a lot of shoots together in the past two years, and they’re so much fun every time. This session was no different! On a sunny afternoon, we explored the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins art museum, one of my favorite places in Kansas City. It’s not too late to get...
