welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited that you're visiting my photography blog. This blog will show you all of my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many love stories. My photography style is a fun and relaxed documentary style, and I focus more on emotions than posed stuff. :) Besides photography, I love my husband (Jeff), our miniature schnauzer (Petey), and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

Happy Birthday to my husband!

I love birthdays. I love the idea of celebrating one person, all day long, once a year. So it had better be GOOD.
Jeff, on the other hand, doesn’t really get into birthdays too much. By that, I mean he doesn’t get worked up about his own birthday. So I have to be extra into it,...

The Getty Art Musuem, Los Angeles

During my trip to photograph the HOBY World Leadership Congress, we got to visit the Getty art museum in LA. It was officially one of the best museums I have ever visited. The buildings themselves were works of art, the views were gorgeous, and it was such a relaxing, peaceful environment. I’d love to spend...

I’m in California

…and I wanted to share a few photos with you I took on the campus of a high school! No wonder high schools on TV look so much cooler than any high school I’ve ever seen in the midwest — because they have those kind of high schools here on the west coast!
I’m...

Moments like this…

…are why I LOVE my job.
When I was editing the images from Sarah and Brett’s wedding, I came across another image that just made me smile. I love everything about this — the expressions on their face, the backlighting from the windows, and their friends in the background.
A moment that can last just a second...

Two reasons why I love Kansas in the summertime

I might not be a “farm girl” but I did grow up in the country… and I love wide open blue skies with fluffy white clouds, and fields of rolling golden wheat. These were both taken back in June, and I never got around to sharing them. So here they are.
Another thing I love in...

I’m still making progress on my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days — thanks so much to everyone who has given me ideas for how to complete items so far! It’s been a really fun journey, and I can’t believe I started it over two years ago now! It’s now getting down...

Fun with flashlights

This is so far from what I usually do, but I thought it would be fun to post — it’s always good to try out new things in photography and see what happens!
While I was visiting my family over the 4th of July holiday, they humored me for some fun shots outside in the dark...

A Story.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about this job I get to do. Several times in the past few weeks, I’ve had people ask me what I do for a living. When I tell them that I’m a wedding photographer, the response is always “Oh, wow! That must be so awesome! What a great job.”...

Learn how to make sushi (#54 on my list)

You may or may not have heard about my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. It’s a list I came up with for myself at the beginning of July 2008 with 101 things I wanted to try over the next 1001 days (it ends next March). The list contains a variety of...

My little brother in black and white

I got to take photos of my little younger brother today. He’s in Kansas City spending about 5 days with us to kick off his summer break. He’s pretty entertaining, and I can’t believe he’s almost a senior in high school. I’m excited to do his official senior photos later this year, but for now,...
