welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited you're here. This blog will show you my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many stories. I care more about people than pictures, because it's your story that provides photo-worthy moments.

Besides photography, I love my husband Jeff, our miniature schnauzer Petey, movie theater candy, and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

All of the fun photos in the blog header are of Jeff and I recently -- taken by our amazingly talented friends Jeremy and Ashley of www.wearetheparsons.com! We have them to thank for capturing us exactly how we are.

Lisa and Brian: models for our photography class!

A few weeks ago, I helped teach a class for beginner photographers with my friend Chris of La Brisa Photography, as part of Photography for a Cause. The proceeds from the class went directly to my favorite non-profit organization, HOBY! It was so much fun teaching 16 people how to use their camera well, get...

My best friend is moving far, far away.

But before she goes off to the west coast, we had to get in the annual photo shoot during the month of Kasie and Aleks’ wedding anniversary. They’ve been married for three years now, and I keep telling them they’re going to love these yearly photos of them when they’re like 75. Since they’re leaving...

B in black and white.

She goes by B. Because she’s that cool. Not even Madonna goes by M. I snapped a few shots of B at a recent photography class I helped teach with La Brisa Photography. She’s so cute I had to share a few here.

Michaela and Evan love each other

They’ve been married for a little over two years now. They wanted photos that capture them at this stage in their marriage, and they wanted some with their “baby” Ruby. We met up at the location of their wedding reception, actually, because they love the venue and wanted to have a new perspective two years...

Family Photos in Chicago!

While we visited Chicago for a few days this week, I got to take photos for a super cute family. It was a head shots + family portrait session, and it was great! Both Liz and Eric needed updated head shots for their careers, and they have the most adorable 8-month-old baby girl, who was...

Jenna and Pat!

Jenna and Pat are so much fun. We had an awesome time at our session, laughed a lot, had a little run-in with some huge bumble bees, talked about Twilight and Harry Potter, and also captured some adorable photos of them in the process. They’ve been married for about two and a half years, have...

Portrait special benefitting a youth program!

If you’ve followed my blog for any amount of time at all, you’ve certainly heard of HOBY. HOBY (or Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership) is an international non-profit organization that is so near and dear to my heart. I went through the program (a summer camp of sorts focused on volunteerism, community service, and a variety...

Nick and Katie

I only took about 6 frames of Nick and Katie during their shoot at the Don’t Give Up Project. But I really only needed one.

The Don’t Give Up Project

How do I even begin to explain something like The Don’t Give Up Project? How do I tell you, in words or in pictures, about the hearts of the people who attended? How do I show you how much fun this retreat in the mountains is, while also conveying how inspiring it is? Jeff and...

Portraits in a Missouri snowstorm!

Jeff and I rolled into Springfield, Missouri, during a snowstorm that we didn’t know we were going to run into. The snow was falling heavily and blowing around like crazy. We’ve had so much snow recently (a real blizzard even!) that it was pretty crazy that I haven’t yet taken photos of anyone in the...
