You may or may not have heard about my list of 101 things to do in 1001 days. It’s a list I came up with for myself at the beginning of July 2008 with 101 things I wanted to try over the next 1001 days (it ends next March). The list contains a variety of things — some business, some personal, some a little silly, and it’s been an awesome way to challenge myself to do things I might not have done before. I’m a big believer in creating life experiences for ourselves that stretch our creativity and comfort zone, and that make our story a great one.
Most recently, I tackled number 54 on the list, which was learn how to make sushi. And when I do things, I like to do them in a big way — usually involving parties with friends. When I conquered the “eat a Big Mac” task on the list, we threw a Big Mac party… so, naturally, when it came time to learn how to make sushi, I wanted our friends to enjoy it with me. Our good friend Chris Hsieh with La Brisa Photography was in town for a few days, and he volunteered to teach us how.
Now, before some of you get really grossed out and say “eww, sushi?!” let me explain something. Not all sushi contains raw fish. Not all sushi is as weird as you might have built it up in your mind. In fact, it’s pretty tasty and surprisingly filling. To calm your nerves, here are the ingredients we used in our sushi: sticky rice, seaweed paper, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, imitation crab, and apples. Pretty safe stuff.
