welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited you're here. This blog will show you my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many stories. I care more about people than pictures, because it's your story that provides photo-worthy moments.

Besides photography, I love my husband Jeff, our miniature schnauzer Petey, movie theater candy, and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

All of the fun photos in the blog header are of Jeff and I recently -- taken by our amazingly talented friends Jeremy and Ashley of www.wearetheparsons.com! We have them to thank for capturing us exactly how we are.

Sarah and Brett’s Kansas City Wedding

Their love came out of friendship. Common interests, lots of laughs, and having fun together. The best way for love to begin.

Their wedding day was a reflection of that. Friends and family, lots of laughs, and celebrating together. The best way for a marriage to begin.

Sarah loves the sunshine and wanted her wedding day images to be filled with light. She got her wish — it was a very sunny day, and their ceremony and reception venues both had huge windows, perfect for pouring in light. I love how the light changes as their day progresses, but is present from start to finish — from the golden light in the hotel room, to the light through the leaves during their portraits, the huge windows in the chapel, and the reception’s colored lighting.

I was lucky enough to have my awesome husband, Jeff, shooting alongside me on Sarah and Brett’s wedding. Here is a little preview of their day.

While I was with the ladies at their hotel, Jeff was a few miles away with the guys at their hotel, where they got ready and watched the World Cup coverage.

I love the moment when a bride puts on her dress — it’s a flurry of activity:

Sarah met up with her dad at the hotel, and he escorted her in the limo to the chapel to see Brett for the first time.

The ceremony at the chapel at Church of the Resurrection was beautiful and personal — the pastor read things that Sarah and Brett wrote about each other and their relationship, and it was really neat to hear.

Their reception at Deer Creek Golf Club had a perfect summer vibe, starting with their signature drink in their wedding colors… they called it “The Something Blue” (how cute is that?!).

They also had a “words of wisdom” guest book, where guests could write notes on cards, and tie them up in little envelopes. I have never seen it done quite like this before, and I loved it!

They kicked off their reception with their first dance, and their wedding party all stood behind them on the dance floor, swaying to the music.

The rest of the celebration was so much fun — too much fun, in fact, to post all of the party shots separately, so enjoy these compilations:
