Fun families make me smile

I had such a good time with this family, just a few weeks after the dad returned home from overseas. Their kids are adorable, and we explored the park together, finding all sorts of fun things like fountains, flowers, and squirrels. And, for future reference, if you need a little girl to smile for you, just ask her to show you her “I love flowers” face… apparently that equals smiling bigger than ever. So cute!

This is our third photo shoot in about a year or so, and every time I get to see this adorable family, I get pretty pumped to have my own family! I LOVE how they interact together, how much fun they all have, how super cute their kids are, and how much laughter happens in the hour I’m there. It’s so much fun. And exactly how I want my future family to be! Here are some of my favorites from their shoot, which we did at the Liberty Memorial, since the Dad to these cute kiddos is in the Army!

These two are the cutest girls ever… I think it must be in their genes. Am I allowed to say that if they’re my cousins? I got to see Holly and Hanna for a Christmas celebration, and they are some of the most adorable girls, who are so sweet and also so entertaining. They also like to have their photos taken, so I snapped a few of them outside during a family Christmas gathering. Here are a few that showcase their adorableness!

Home: Operation Love Reunited Session

It was raining and cold. So we went with Plan B, to shoot inside. I suggested shooting in their home, and I’m so glad we did. This session was part of Operation: Love Reunited, an organization of volunteer photographers who provide portrait sessions for families of deployed soldiers. I’ll be really excited to send this adorable little girl’s dad an album of photos — all taken around their home. I love how easily we captured her funny, sweet personality. Shooting at home helps, because kids are comfortable in their own environment!

Of course, we took a few with mom. I love the ones of them cuddled up together… I didn’t pose them, she just leaned into her mom so sweetly.

As I do more sessions like this, I realize how much I enjoy doing more lifestyle-centered photo shoots, capturing people in their natural environments — especially children. Maybe I’ll do all kids’ shoots in their homes from now on.

Family Photos at Antioch Park

The season for fall family portraits is winding down, but going out with a bang for sure! The leaves are falling more and more from the pretty fall trees every day, but hanging on just long enough for us to get some great fall portraits (my favorite time of year for outdoor sessions!). I met up with this beautiful family at the park for a fun session on a very chilly morning. Our noses might have been a little pink, but we had a great time capturing photos of the whole family… with a break to warm up in the car.

Family Portraits in Parkville, Missouri

It is so much fun for me to photograph families more than once as their family grows and changes with time. I photographed this adorable family for the first time before their new little guy, Wade, was even born, but they knew he was on the way! I was so excited to meet Wade and capture more fun photos of the family having fun together. We met up in Parkville, Missouri, for some fall-themed family portraits of Wade, big brother Owen, and their mom and dad!

I’m sure I’ve said it before, and I’m positive I’ll say it again: I love shooting family photos in a family’s home! Since my style of photography is more of a documentary format, I love being able to do little mini-documentaries of families doing what they do best — being themselves! I approach family portraits just like I do a wedding day — I seek to capture details, emotions, and little moments shared between people who love each other.

This family is adorable. The boys are just so cute, and were so much fun to spend time with — I loved hearing their stories and capturing their personalities. This family knows how to play together, too. It was so great to watch them all interact and have fun as a family — and capture photos of it! Here are a few of my favorites from their session at home:
