welcome to the ericamay blog!

Hi! I'm Erica May Short, and I'm so excited that you're visiting my photography blog. This blog will show you all of my current work with a few fun personal things mixed in to help you get to know me better. I am a wedding and portrait photographer in Kansas City, and I love my job. I am so blessed to be a part of so many love stories. My photography style is a fun and relaxed documentary style, and I focus more on emotions than posed stuff. :) Besides photography, I love my husband (Jeff), our miniature schnauzer (Petey), and the color green. You can visit my main portfolio website at www.ericamay.com!

The green room.

I painted my dining room walls bright green.
The walls used to be tan. Normal, unassuming tan. Almost brown but not quite dark enough to be called a rich brown. Just tan.
I’m not sure what prompted the sudden change to the bright, bold color — but I’m thankful my husband is the patient, willing, heart-of-gold kind...

Kansas City Portraits: Bree and Brian, Columbus Park

It’s hard to believe that it was over two years ago that Bree and Brian got married, and I got to shoot their wedding. It’s hard to believe how quickly life changes and we find ourselves in a new place — somewhere maybe very different than where we imagined just a few short...

Surprise your sweetheart: Valentine’s Day portrait special!

I’ve never been a big fan of Valentine’s Day. That might sound odd coming from someone who is a little obsessed with people who are in love and everything about being happy and in love and emotional. But here’s the thing — I never understood why we had to have this day where...

When she’s 75… she’ll love these.

My best friend’s birthday was Saturday. Since it’s my job to capture the lives of people around me, I talked her into letting me take her portraits on her birthday… one day during a time in her life that she’ll love looking back on when we’re older, and everything is different, and we’re still best...

Kansas City Engagement Photos: Dallas and Megan, City Market Area

After just a few minutes with Dallas and Megan, it’s apparent that they care very deeply about each other. They are so sweet to one another. I like to find what it is about each of my couples that makes their relationship unique, and that forms the bond between them. During Dallas and Megan’s engagement...

Tucker’s One-Year Session: Kansas City Baby Photographer

Getting to see babies grow up throughout their first year is one of my favorite things. This morning, we ended 2009 with Tucker’s one-year session at his home. Doing portrait shoots at my clients’ homes is also one of my favorite things — it’s so relaxed, natural, and great for small kids! Tucker has grown...

Merry Christmas: A Video Christmas Card!

Merry Christmas!
We wanted to come up with a fun way to wish you all a very Merry Christmas, so we put together this silly little video (using Jeff’s new videography equipment, of course!) of us decorating our house and doing the things we do at Christmas time. You’ll even see a little drive...

It’s a good thing I don’t take myself too seriously…

Or I wouldn’t share these photos with you of us shooting.
I came across a little collection of photos of us shooting at a wedding or two this fall. And I thought it might be fun to share them with you! So, here we are “in action.”
Jeff looks cool when he shoots…

I’m not quite...

Behind-the-scenes Video!

Most of you don’t yet know that Jeff is branching out to provide video services! I’ll have many, many more details about this coming soon. For now, though, we wanted to share with you some fun spur-of-the-moment footage of what a photo shoot looks like with me! This was our very first attempt at taking...

Urban Kansas City Engagement: Nathan and Erin’s Slideshow!

I’m still trying out this new slideshow feature, thanks to awesome upgrades through my Pictage partnership. Pictage hosts all of my online galleries and is my professional print vendor. Now, they also allow me to share slideshows, so you all get to see a wider variety of images from sessions. I’m not sure that I’ll...
